Install the companion
Install the ZotLit companion add-on in Zotero
The companion is a Zotero add-on that lets ZotLit communicate with your library. It requires Zotero 9 or later.
The companion ships on two update channels. The v2 alpha is served on the beta channel; the stable channel has no v2 release yet. To follow the alpha, use the Beta tab below.
Install the add-on
A beta install auto-updates through Zotero as new releases ship on either channel.
Download the .xpi file
Download the latest companion asset directly:
Download the.xpizotlit-zotero-2.0.0-alpha.3.xpiIf you are using Firefox, you should right click the link and choose Save Link As...
Prefer to pick manually? Find latest companion release from ZotLit releases page that starts with zt-.
Install in Zotero
In Zotero, open Tools > Add-ons. Click the gear menu and select Install Add-on From File.... Choose the .xpi file you downloaded, then confirm when prompted.
Confirm the installation
After installing, a ZotLit pane should appear in Zotero's settings.
You do not need to configure anything here right now. The next section explains when this matters.
The stable channel has no v2 release yet
During the alpha period, use the Beta tab to install the companion. Beta installs move to stable releases automatically once v2 is promoted.
About live updates
The companion supports two modes of communication with ZotLit in Obsidian. Basic actions like opening items from context menus work through protocol links with no extra setup. For live updates (where changes in your Zotero library push automatically to Obsidian), the companion needs its notification server enabled and pointed at the right URL.
The setup for live updates is covered in Set up live updates.
